Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) bundles the missions of both precursory institutions, the mission of a university with teaching and research tasks and that of a large-scale research institution of the Helmholtz Association conducting program-oriented provident research. Within these missions, KIT is operating along the three strategic fields of action of research, teaching, and innovation.
KIT pools work in the field of electric energy storage for stationary and mobile applications in the “Competence E” project. With a unique focus on the entire electric energy storage system, industrially applicable cost-efficient solutions are being developed for stationary storage systems and electric drive trains of the next generations. New manufacturing processes for the cost-efficient production of these batteries and E-drive systems are being demonstrated. The objective is to develop within seven years battery systems with a gravimetric density of 250 Wh/kg, producible on an industrial scale at the costs of 250€/kWh, for use in stationary applications and electric vehicles.
