Bridging the gap between research and industry, the Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden Württemberg (Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research, ZSW) is one of the leading German research institutes for renewable energy. Our expertise spans the complete value chain in the areas of photovoltaics, energy systems analysis, regenerative fuels, storage technologies and fuel cells: from materials development to the development of manufacturing techniques and components, and including pre-production investigations, systems applications and quality tests. Application-minded thinking makes us a flexible partner for companies of any size. Our 235 employees generate a turnover of about 26 m. Euros.

The ZSW Solab tests performance, quality and reliability of PV modules according to standards but also in customer-specific tests: stress by heat, cold and dampness in climate chambers; potential-induced degradation; performance measurement, also after pre-conditioning for stabilisation especially for thin-film PV; mechanical load, EL, thermography.

Outdoor test facility for performance and yield measurements of PV modules and small systems with high-resolution acquisition of relevant electrical and meteorological data: since 1988 near Merklingen in the south of Germany and since 2012 near Barcelona in Spain.

Development and application of testing methods: characterisation of PV modules and systems; long-term module stability; methods for accelerating loss and ageing of modules; correlation of laboratory and outdoor measurements; collaboration in standardisation committees.

System technology and grid integration of PV systems: PV storage systems; energy management; optimisation for personal use; smart grids on distribution grid level.

Counseling of manufacturers, investors, banks, project developers, operators: system measurement and acceptance; yield prognosis and site assessment; technical due diligence reports, solar and wind power output forecasts.
